Don't confuse real happiness with cheap and passing thrills

The Gospel for Australia day is the same as the Gospel of the fourth Sunday in ordinary time (year a).

We are so blessed. There are so many reasons for us to be happy. Let's take a step back and think why, especially in light of the tragedy in Perth.

RIP Peter Lynch and Enday Cakrawati Peter Lynch and his colleague and partner Endah Cakrawati plunged to their death.

Blessed are you who don't confuse real happiness with cheap and passing thrills

The world says: Happy are you who are well-off: you can have whatever you want. Be glad and rejoice when the money is corning in fast. Never stop to ask by what means or at whose expense. You will be the envy of all.

Christ says: Happy are you who know your need of God. You who put your trust in God rather than in material things. All that you need will be given to you.

Happy you who realise that it is not the amount of money you possess that makes you rich, but the kind of people you are. You will be rich in God's eyes, and that's what matters.

The world says: Happy you who are tough. You who throw your weight around. You who are ruthless. People will be afraid of you, and you'll get results.

Christ says: Happy you who are gentle and kind. You who refuse to get on by trampling on others. Gentleness is not a form of weakness as many think; it is a form of strength. There are many vital tasks which only gentleness can accomplish.

The world says: Happy are you who live it up. Remember you only live once. So, let your hair down. Always strive to keep yourself high on something or other. Life will be great fun.

Christ says: Happy are you who remember that the most valuable things in life have to be bought with pain and sacrifice. You who don't confuse real happiness with cheap and passing thrills. Even though you may sow in sorrow, you will reap in joy.

The world says: Happy are you who hunger for power, status, and fame. Never stop to ask if something is right. Ask only if it benefits you. You will always be in the limelight.

Christ says: Happy are you who have standards and values, and who are prepared to live up to them. You who realise that to live rightly is what life is about. Those who rate this as important as eating and drinking will taste real happiness even here on earth.

The world says: Happy are you who crush vour opponent. You who show no mercy or forgiveness to those who make mistakes. You’ll be the boss, and everybody will know it.

Christ says: Happy are you who are able to make allowance for the sins of others, and whose greatness lies in vour ability to forgive. The sun of God's mercy will shine warmly on you.

The world says: Happy you who have clean teeth and clean skins. You who keep up to date with the latest styles in clothes. You will really be with it.

Christ says: Happy are you who have clean hearts. It is from the heart that all our thoughts, words, and deeds flow. If the heart is clean, then all that flows from it will be clean — like water flowing from an unpolluted spring.

The world says: Happy are you troublemakers and war-mongers. People will fear you, and you will get sensational headlines.

Christ says: Blessed are you peacemakers. Happy you who spread understanding among people, who welcome the stranger, and who work for a just society You are true children of God.

The world says: Blessed are those who steal and cheat, and who get off scot-free.

Christ says: Blessed are you who make a stand for what is right. If you suffer for vour stand, the wounds you bear will be honourable wounds, and they will mark you out as a true disciple of mine. You will gain honour on earth and glory in heaven.
